Optics & Photonics Days 2023 gathered an international group of experts and over three hundred visitors in Joensuu

Optics & Photonics Days 2023 took place in Joensuu between 30th of May and 1st of June. Over three hundred registered conference participants, of which 25% came from abroad, attended the diverse academic and industrial program.

The high-quality academic and industrial program of Optics & Photonics Days 2023, along with the sold-out industrial exhibition and several side events, attracted around four hundred visitors in total. The industrial exhibition also opened its doors to the general public on Thursday and drew around fifty city residents interested in photonics. At the exhibitors’ booths, visitors had the opportunity to try out augmented reality smart glasses developed by Dispelix Oy from Joensuu and Microsoft’s Hololens2 mixed reality glasses. Next-generation smart glasses are utilized in various fields, including education, healthcare, and industry, to improve user accuracy and productivity.

In addition to comprehensive expert presentations, the event featured a comprehensive side program. The side event held at the Photonics Center showcased the Active Alignment service, which can be utilized, for example, by camera manufacturers in prototype manufacturing. The flagship photonics event of PREIN, funded by the Academy of Finland, discussed the significance of research and industry collaboration. In a traditionally male-dominated field, the need for female expertise was also emphasized, and the Women in Photonics event featured insights from women in leadership and expert positions at three significant publicly traded companies: Microsoft, Vaisala, and Modulight. Furthermore, on Thursday, a recruitment event was organized alongside the industrial exhibition to facilitate connections between professionals and companies.

During the conference dinner on Wednesday, Photonics Finland elected a new board. Kim Grundström was chosen as the chairman, and Heidi Piili as the vice chairman. Senop Oy, the largest glass optics manufacturer in the Nordic countries, was awarded as the Photonics Company of the Year. Senop provides comprehensive optoelectronics and professional communication services and equipment for demanding and critical situations, such as secure official and professional communications. Safety and defense was indeed one of the main themes at OPD2023, as the importance of photonics applications in the field continues to grow.

– Joensuu is home to one of the significant photonics clusters at European level. Hosting the event in Joensuu was a significant step in strengthening our international networks. This provides a solid foundation for the growth of photonics in Joensuu, says Juha Purmonen from Photonics Finland.

Save the Date: OPD 2023

The annual Photonics Finland Main Event, Optics and Photonics Days (OPD) 2023 will be held 30. May – 1. June 2023 in University of Eastern Finland (UEF) campus, Joensuu, Finland.

OPD offers a unique opportunity to learn from interesting Academic and Industry presentations, network with companies, students and researchers in the field of photonics and optics, but also to explore products and services in OPD Exhibition that is held during the conference.

Also there is a lot of other activity such as traditional Networking Dinner, Job Fair, Nordic Photonics meeting, Women in Optics and Photonics event and also Poster- and Pitch sessions.

OPD is about energetic photonics community, nice people, interesting discussions, in depth presentations, new business, new innovations, new job opportunities, presenting your findings, meeting colleagues and creating new connections, good food and great atmosphere!

Two representatives from Joensuu have been elected to take part in the decision-making for European photonics priorities

Joensuu’s status as a leading European level photonics cluster is again strengthened as professor Jyrki Saarinen from University of Eastern Finland and executive director Juha Purmonen from Photonics Finland have been elected into the Board of Stakeholders of Photonics21. The European Technology Platform Photonics21 coordinates photonics research and innovation priorities and provides input to the European research framework programme Horizon Europe with the aim to establish Europe as a leader in the development and deployment of photonics technologies within the various applications fields such as ICT, lighting, industrial manufacturing, life science, safety as well as in education and training.

The Board of Stakeholders consist of a hundred members and is the main decision-making body of the Photonics21 platform and has a significant input for example in decisionmaking regarding EU funding for the industry. This four-year term is the second for both Saarinen and Purmonen. Tauno Vähä-Heikkilä, the vice president for microelectronics at VTT, who has elected to the Board of Stakeholders in the previous elections, continues as the third Finnish member.

  • One of the leading and internationally recognized research and innovation centers for photonics has been established in Joensuu around the first-rate research conducted at the university of Eastern Finland. Research plays a key role in building the European future and it is important for impactful and responsible university research to be present in European decision-making bodies. The results of the Photonics21 elections pay tribute to this research and further strengthen the photonics cluster in the Joensuu area, says the Rector of the University of Eastern Finland Jukka Mönkkönen.

Welcome to the officially opened Joensuu Photonics Center!

Open presentation of Photonics Center at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 on Friday 11th November.

Photonics is the generation, transmission and utilization of light and other electromagnetic radiation. Photonics offers solutions to the global challenges of our time.

Joensuu has over 50 years of history in photonics research and during the past decade our city has become one of the significant ecosystems for photonics research and business in Europe.

Outside the Photonics Center visitors can view a light artwork, created especially for the Photonics week, from light artist Kari Kola.
